The Fishing Has Been Excellent! BIG FISH

It has been an excellent two weeks of fishing! I have been busy this past week and have been on the water every morning and a few afternoons. The morning fishing has produced consistent action on both fly and spinning gear. The afternoon fishing has been more difficult, mostly related to the weather; high winds and rain. The fish of the week was on Thursday morning by Russ Landon, a 43” monster that he hooked on the fly. We knew it was big as soon as he set the hook and it immediately took him 100 yards into the backing.

On top of excellent fishing conditions, I was lucky enough to have multiple very experienced fly-fishermen on board throughout the week. Their experience and talent as casters enabled us to fish in various conditions and situations and increased the number of fish we brought to the boat. The mornings have produced large numbers of fish on fly. This morning, John and Bill who were in from Utah had a blast hooking multiple fish on poppers, both on fly and spin.  The fishing has been the most successful on the outgoing tide, but the fish seem to be holding in multiple areas throughout the harbor. Find some moving water and there are bound to be fish holding up in it.

I am fishing through Tuesday morning then I am away until Aug. 20th on my honeymoon. I hope to get some good bone fishing in while away. I have some good openings for when I return, so send me an email soon if interested.

Stripers on the Fly

The past few days on the water have been some of the best of the season. We have been catching tons of fish on fly and spin, with many of them in the 32-36” range. An influx of herring has made its way into the harbor and the fish are feeding heavily. With a new moon, we have had huge tides all morning long.

A good friend of mine, Phil Porter was on the water with me on Tuesday. It was a flat calm day and the tide was just beginning to move as we got out there. We started the morning by heading outside the harbor. We found fish right away and were on them for a couple of hours. They were moving fast and it was hard to stay on top of them, but we had constant action when we were. After this slowed, we moved to a rip that had formed halfway through the incoming. Fish were stacked up in this rip. Every pass produced multiple fish. Phil was able to hook into his biggest striper ever on fly on one of our last drifts. We were back at the dock by 8:30, both having hooked our fill of stripers.

Wednesday morning I fished with Andy and his friend Jeff. Both were enthusiastic about the morning fishing as we headed out through the fog. We slowly made our way outside the harbor as the fog began to lift slightly. We were able to find the fish again this morning outside and they were more consistently feeding. It was an amazing site the see the water explode as the fish pushed the herring to the surface. Needless to say, Jeff and Andy spent the next two hours hooking into fish on almost every cast. Andy switched over to fly and was soon hooking into fish on fly, including a nice 36” fish. Due to the fog, we were the only boat on these fish most of the morning. We decided to try something new after a few hours and headed to the rip that had been so successful the day before. The fish were stacked up once again and we were hooking into them on every pass through.

The fishing has been terrific and hope that it will stay this way for a while!

Hoping the weather to improve

The weather has not been cooperating lately and it is has kept me off the water on a few days. A few days ago I had Bill and his friend Dan and Dan’s daughter Madison on board for a morning of fishing. Bill and Dan were both very accomplished fly fishermen and Madison was a quick learner with the spinning rod. It was a difficult morning of fishing and we worked hard for our fish. After trying out a few spots in the inner harbor we went outside to the outer islands and found some fish in the structure. After fishing the rocks and hooking into a few nice fish, we found a school of bass on the surface in about 45 feet of water. The fairly consistent action lasted for about an hour and Madison was able to hook into her first striper! Well done!

Although the weather does not seem to be changing, there are fish out there to be caught. I will be on the water over the next few days and will put out reports. Call or email any time.
