Boca Grande Fishing
4. April 2010 by admin.
I returned this past week from two weeks in Boca Grande, Florida. The cool winter in Florida this year definitely affected the fishing. The water temperatures while we were there were about ten degrees cooler than average, and that made the fishing tough. On top of that, the wind was up almost every day we were there and temps were in the low to mid 60s. Can’t believe it was warmer in Boston most of the time I was down there…
That being said, I was able to get some good fish while down there. When the water cleared a little and the the wind was down, the trout fishing was excellent. I took my brother and three year old nephew out a few times and we got into some good trout and Spanish mackerel.
![]()
Seeing that there was very little bait in the water and the fish were not up on their usual flats, my dad and I spend a few days exploring some new spots, trying to find areas where the water was clearer, warmer and was holding fish. We used the kayaks to get back into some deep back country and found some nice redfish. I hooked this one early in the day in about six inches of water. We hooked a few others and had some amazing top water strikes, but the fishing was slower than usual.
![]()
Although the snook season is closed for the year, you can still catch them. They were very hard to find and was only able to hook this one on a flat in the inner harbor. The snook really have been devastated by these cold temperatures.
The striper season is right around the corner. The boat arrives on May 1st and the first stripers of the season will not be far behind. I am looking forward to this fishing season and have some new flies to try out when the first fish arrive.
Please contact me with any questions or to book a charter.

Florida Fishing
25. February 2010 by admin.
Heading to Florida for two weeks in March. Although the temps have been low and the fishing has not been great, water temps have been going up as the weather improves. Although it will be a bit early for Tarpon, hoping for some good snook and reds fishing.
I have been tying all winter long and have developed some new patterns for the summer. Boat will arrive in Boston on May 1 and the stripers should not be far behind.
Looking forward to a great season on the water.

Fall Stripers
11. October 2009 by Captain Webb.
Now that I am back to my full time job of teaching, I have not been able to get out on the water as much as I would like. I have been out there most weekends and a few evenings. The fishing has been fantastic. Lots of surface action can be found both in the mornings and the afternoons.
Last weekend I had Jeff Woods back on the boat with his friends Doug and Nicole. We were out on the water for only a few hours in the morning, but everyone hooked their fill of stripers (and one nice blue caught by Nicole!) We had a falling tide all afternoon and were on one school of fish the whole time. Jeff was hooking stripers on flies both on the surface and underneath. Doug and Nicole spent the afternoon hooking fish on the surface with Zara spooks and slug-gos. Jeff had a fantastic evening as not only did he catch all the fish he could on both fly and spinning gear, but became a father only a few hours after getting back to the dock. Congrats!
The boat leaves for Florida in next weekend so the season ends for me next Sunday. On to thoughts of Snook and Redfish this winter and spring. I am hoping to also get a trip in this late spring for some tarpon. Thank you everybody for a terrific season and I hope to see everyone on the water come May! I have a group of students building fly rods this fall, which has been fun to teach. I will post some pictures when they are finished. Tight lines, Captain Webb

The Fishing Has Been Excellent! BIG FISH
31. July 2009 by Captain Webb.
It has been an excellent two weeks of fishing! I have been busy this past week and have been on the water every morning and a few afternoons. The morning fishing has produced consistent action on both fly and spinning gear. The afternoon fishing has been more difficult, mostly related to the weather; high winds and rain. The fish of the week was on Thursday morning by Russ Landon, a 43” monster that he hooked on the fly. We knew it was big as soon as he set the hook and it immediately took him 100 yards into the backing.
On top of excellent fishing conditions, I was lucky enough to have multiple very experienced fly-fishermen on board throughout the week. Their experience and talent as casters enabled us to fish in various conditions and situations and increased the number of fish we brought to the boat. The mornings have produced large numbers of fish on fly. This morning, John and Bill who were in from Utah had a blast hooking multiple fish on poppers, both on fly and spin. The fishing has been the most successful on the outgoing tide, but the fish seem to be holding in multiple areas throughout the harbor. Find some moving water and there are bound to be fish holding up in it.
I am fishing through Tuesday morning then I am away until Aug. 20th on my honeymoon. I hope to get some good bone fishing in while away. I have some good openings for when I return, so send me an email soon if interested.
Tight Lines,
Captain Webb

Stripers on the Fly
24. July 2009 by Captain Webb.
The past few days on the water have been some of the best of the season. We have been catching tons of fish on fly and spin, with many of them in the 32-36” range. An influx of herring has made its way into the harbor and the fish are feeding heavily. With a new moon, we have had huge tides all morning long.
A good friend of mine, Phil Porter was on the water with me on Tuesday. It was a flat calm day and the tide was just beginning to move as we got out there. We started the morning by heading outside the harbor. We found fish right away and were on them for a couple of hours. They were moving fast and it was hard to stay on top of them, but we had constant action when we were. After this slowed, we moved to a rip that had formed halfway through the incoming. Fish were stacked up in this rip. Every pass produced multiple fish. Phil was able to hook into his biggest striper ever on fly on one of our last drifts. We were back at the dock by 8:30, both having hooked our fill of stripers.
Wednesday morning I fished with Andy and his friend Jeff. Both were enthusiastic about the morning fishing as we headed out through the fog. We slowly made our way outside the harbor as the fog began to lift slightly. We were able to find the fish again this morning outside and they were more consistently feeding. It was an amazing site the see the water explode as the fish pushed the herring to the surface. Needless to say, Jeff and Andy spent the next two hours hooking into fish on almost every cast. Andy switched over to fly and was soon hooking into fish on fly, including a nice 36” fish. Due to the fog, we were the only boat on these fish most of the morning. We decided to try something new after a few hours and headed to the rip that had been so successful the day before. The fish were stacked up once again and we were hooking into them on every pass through.
The fishing has been terrific and hope that it will stay this way for a while!

Captain Webb

Hoping the weather to improve
2. July 2009 by Captain Webb.
The weather has not been cooperating lately and it is has kept me off the water on a few days. A few days ago I had Bill and his friend Dan and Dan’s daughter Madison on board for a morning of fishing. Bill and Dan were both very accomplished fly fishermen and Madison was a quick learner with the spinning rod. It was a difficult morning of fishing and we worked hard for our fish. After trying out a few spots in the inner harbor we went outside to the outer islands and found some fish in the structure. After fishing the rocks and hooking into a few nice fish, we found a school of bass on the surface in about 45 feet of water. The fairly consistent action lasted for about an hour and Madison was able to hook into her first striper! Well done!
Although the weather does not seem to be changing, there are fish out there to be caught. I will be on the water over the next few days and will put out reports. Call or email any time.
Tight lines,
Capt. Webb

Wind, Rain, and lots of Bass!
24. June 2009 by Captain Webb.
With high winds and rain, the weather has not been the best on the water for the past few days, but it looks like it is to get better. This past weekend, my godfather John was on the boat for a morning of fishing. With him were his son and daughter-in-law, John Jr. and Jonnie. The weather for the trip Sunday was not great, but at least that kept everyone else off the water. We had a school of fish practically to ourselves all morning long! We were rolling on the waves most of the morning, but there was not lack of fish. Both John and his father are experienced fisherman and even with the high winds, John was able to crank out some monster casts with the fly. We ran into a big school of bass with a few blues mixed in just outside the harbor. We spent the majority of the morning on this school. They were spread out and moving fast on hearing, but each drift we were able to pick up at least one fish of fly and spin. Everyone was able to get fish. So although it was a wet and windy morning, it was a terrific morning on the water. I will be on the water this Thursday and Friday and hope to get into some good fish.
Tight Lines,
Capt. Webb

2009 Kids Striper Challange
16. June 2009 by admin.
The weather for the week is calling for light winds and only a little rain. We should have some good fishing days out there this week. I will be out on the water most days this week and will keep the reports coming! Congratulations go out to Kevin Casey, the winner of the 2009 Kids Striper Challenge in Marblehead this past weekend. He hooked this nice striper on Sunday night to win the tournament. Well done Kevin! Keep up the fishing!

6/14/09 Rain and blitzing Stripers!
15. June 2009 by Captain Webb.
I was on the water this morning with my brother Seth and sister-in-law, Liv. Both very accomplished fly-fishermen. Seth had returned a few weeks ago from a trip to the Keys for some tarpon fishing. The weather and the fish may not have been the same, but the action was on fire! The weather was less than ideal, with rain most of the morning, but the fishing was worth it! Waking up to the pouring rain, we almost did not go out, but were glad we did. When we got out there, the rain stopped and the wind died. After trying a few spots with no luck, we headed outside the harbor and found a nice school of fish on the surface in about five feet of water. After a few casts all three of us were hooked into fish. Seth and Liv spend the next hour hooking into nice fish on the fly. The school was up and down for about an hour and we were able to hook into a good number of them. After multiple attempts by me to get one to hit a popper fly, I handed it over to Seth for a few attempts. On one of his last casts, one swirled and then attacked the popper just at the boat; always an amazing sight. As soon as we had gotten into the fish the rain also picked up again so after about an hour of continuous action we decided to call it a morning. We made one stop to check the lobster traps and caught a few shots of Seth and our interesting catch! Tight Lines, Captain Webb

6/13/09 Bluefish in the Harbor
13. June 2009 by Captain Webb.
The first bluefish of the season was hooked this morning. It is early and it was not the only one we saw this morning. I was on the water this morning for a couple hours with two of my groomsmen, Todd and Jon. Calm winds and sunny skies made for a perfect morning. We found fish just outside the harbor and were able to hook a few early before the rest of the boats showed up. The fleet of boats that came in to the area put the fish down so after a few nice stripers we made a move. We fished one of my favorite spots and after a few casts we hooked the first fish and as we brought it to the boat, we saw it was a blue. Although I had heard reports of blues in the harbor, I was still surprised to hook one this early! We hooked a few more stripers before we headed in around 8. Send an email or give a call to book a charter. Tight Lines,
Captain Webb

6/7/09- June Fish!
8. June 2009 by admin.
A solid weekend of fishing! Was on the water early Saturday morning with Don Meyers and his friend Jon. We left the dock at 5 am with some cold temps and a little rain, but we were able to find the fish right away not too far outside the harbor which made things all better! After hooking a few nice bass and a few other boats showed up, it shut down. But this was not before Don hooked the monster of the morning. I nice 35” bass which took him for a ride! After it shut down, we headed into Quincy and found some nice fish in there as well. Not much, but a few fish to be found. It all seemed to be slowing so we headed all over with no luck. Before we head in for the morning, we were able to get on another school if fish and catch a few more before we had to call it a day. It was a cold and wet morning, but the fishing was great!
School ends this week so I will be on the water more often starting the middle of the week. Hope to see you out there. Give a call or write me an email to book a charter!

Fishing Etiquette
3. June 2009 by Captain Webb.
I was on the water Tuesday evening with Jonathon Gray from
When I was a guide in Wyoming, although I often fished in areas where you rarely ran into other fisherman, there were rules to how you approached a river that someone else was fishing. Find out which direction he is fishing and go the opposite way. Do not go to the hole next to the one they are fishing. There is plenty of river; share it! These same rules seem to apply when I fish in Florida. If you come upon a boat fishing a flat, see what direction they are moving and go the opposite way. Never short drift someone! In both places, although these unwritten rules are broken time to time, they are generally followed. As I have been fishing Boston
Last night as I was fishing the structure of the outer islands, not another boat in sight and slowly working my way down the rock structure, another boat appeared. There are literally miles of structure in this area. It was a larger boat, obviously a larger charter boat, and he pulled directly in front of me, no more than 10 feet in the direction I was heading. He backed in and started throwing bait into the area my clients were a cast away from fishing! While I am sure that this was his favorite spot, the disregard for other fisherman already there amazes me. Although, the majority of captains on the water follow and understand these unwritten rules, it seems like more people on the water are forgetting them.
The fishing will continue to improve through June and hope to see you out on the water! Email or call me any time to book a charter.
Tight lines,
Captain Webb

Sunday Stripers
31. May 2009 by Captain Webb.
After starting the weekend off in Vermont getting some wedding planning done, I was out on the water this morning with Rick Miller. The weather was perfect with sunny skies and a very light wind. We found fish right away not too far outside of the harbor and he hooked a fish early on fly. The rest of the morning was much of the same; Small schools of fish feeding on herring. They were spread throughout the harbor and were not on the surface for long, but we were able to hook into some nice fish. While on a school of fish outside Quincy, Rick hooked into a monster that must have been hanging just below the school of smaller fish. After bringing him into the backing of his 8 wt. more than once, we landed the 36” fish.
We have continued to have successful trips each day out there and the fishing has been consistent. School ends in two weeks and then I should be on the water more often during the weekday. Book your charter today.
Tight lines,
Captain Webb

Memorial Day Weekend
26. May 2009 by Captain Webb.
I was out on the water a few times this Memorial Day weekend. The blitzes have slowed down, but there are some big fish out there to be caught. I was out early this morning for a few hours before heading to the NCAA lacrosse finals at Gillette. It was a very low tide due to the full moon but I head into one of my most reliable spots. The tide was just beginning to rise as we got out there and we were fishing in about six feet of water. We were spooking a few fish on the surface during our drift and hooked a nice striper on one of my first casts. But the fish of the morning came as we drifted past some structure. The fish hit my fly and took off about 50 yards into my backing before I gained any line back. I landed the 40” striper and after getting a few good shots, released it back. It was a terrific fish and it has been amazing to see the numbers of big fish out there with early!!
The second wave of fish should be making their way through the harbor very soon. I expect the harbor to be full of blitzing fish once again in the next week. If you can’t find any fish on the surface, find some structure and you are bound to find the fish! Tight lines,
Capt. Webb

Game on!!
16. May 2009 by Captain Webb.
The fish are here and there are some big fish in the mix. Is it good or bad luck when the first fish of the season is a 35” monster caught by my fiancée?? I was out on the water last night with Jill for a few hours to scout for a charter this morning. We found a large school of fish feeding on herring. Although they were not busting the surface, we were able to sit on top of them for the few hours we were out there. We were catching them on fly and rubber shad, including the 35” linesider.
This morning I had a long time client, Rick on board for a few hours of fishing. Although he has usually fished with a spinning rod, with an occasional fly, this morning was all fly! I don’t think he will go back to the spinning rod. After finding fish in a similar spot to last night, he was able to hook into two nice fish on his first two casts! Not a bad way to start the morning. We brought quite a few fish to the boat this morning, the largest being a nice 32” fish that gave Rick a terrific fight on the 8 wt. It was actually the first striper caught on the new Hatch reel. Check them out at www.hatchoutdoors.com.
It was another great morning on the water. The fishing slowed some as the wind picked up, but we were still able to pick up a few fish as the morning ended. The fishing is on fire and will only get better. Book your charter today! -Captain Webb

Volvo Ocean Race
12. May 2009 by admin.
Although I was not able to find that first striper of the season this weekend, I was able to get out and see the Volvo Ocean Race in-shore race this Saturday. The boats are truly amazing. The wind was light, but it was still an exciting race.
Sunday’s scouting trip was washed out due to the wind and the arrival of a new niece. Very exciting and was able to spend the day with my 3 year old nephew, drawing pictures of fish on the back patio!
It is any day before the fish arrive in numbers here in the harbor. There are still some weekends available, so book your charter today!!

bait but no first striper
9. May 2009 by admin.
I was out on the water at 6:00 this morning. There was some bait at the entrance to the harbor but was not marking any fish and did not see any on the surface. Made my way around most of the harbor and did not see much. Tested out a new fly patern I tied last night to see how it would swim. Looked great. Tied a rattle in to give it a little noise. Just a matter of days before they are blitzing the surface. Will report again this weekend. Captain Webb

Let the fishing begin
8. May 2009 by Captain Webb.
The boat hit the water a week ago today. I will be on the water all weekend looking to hook into that first striper of the season. Reports of fish in the harbor are out there. Most of these are hold overs and are being caught around the charlestown locks and the warm water outflows in the Mystic. I have seen a lot of bait in the harbor, even last weekend hanging around my slip. The stripers should be here any day now. The spring is a great time to get out on the water. Although the first fish that arrive tend to be on the smaller side, catching one on a 5 or 7 wt. rod can be a blast! Book a charter today. Out this weekend to see what I can find. Will write again then. -Capt. Webb
